KUALA LUMPUR: The CCTV system at former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s granddaughter’s home in Bukit Ledang records footage for only 24 hours, which might have allowed thieves to evade capture.

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the break-in and theft of RM1.8mil worth of belongings might have occurred days before it was discovered.

“There was no credible footage discovered as the CCTV system at the house was only able to record for 24 hours, and the theft was discovered after more than 24 hours. However, we are still investigating the matter thoroughly,” he said when contacted.

DCP Mohamed Usuf said the police have recorded statements from three individuals in connection with the case.

“We have recorded the statements of three individuals—a domestic helper and security guards—but no arrests have been made. We are still pooling our resources to identify and track those responsible for the crime,” he added.

DCP Mohamed Usuf previously stated that the losses involved the victim’s jewellery and personal belongings.

“The house is owned by Mirzan Mahathir, but his daughter lives there. When the incident occurred, there was no one at home except for a domestic helper and other staff. There were signs that the back gate of the house was cut,” he said.
